A Brief History of South Carolina and its Capitol, Columbia

A Brief History of South Carolina:

In the 16th century explorers from Spain and France arrived in what was to become South Carolina to find the land inhabited by Native Americans including Cherokees and Catawbas. In 1670 a settlement was formed near present day Charleston. In 1710 that settlement, Carolina, named after Kind Charles I was divided between South and North Carolina. South Carolina became the eighth state after ratifying the United States Constitution on May 23, 1788.

A Brief History of Columbia, South Carolina:

On March 22, 1786 the legislature approve a bill to create a state capitol, the name of Columbia selected. By 1816 the population exceeded 1,000 people. As of the 2010 Census the population was nearly 130,000. Columbia is home to Fort Jackson, the largest US Army base for Basic Combat Training and the main campus of the University of South Carolina.
